P3 sets up filming at location in Palmdale
posted by Jas, 09/26/06
AV Press reports that filmimg of At World's End has relocated to Site 9 in Palmdale from Walt Disney Studios in Burbank and earlier reports about Keith being drunk on the set were not true.

Filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third installment of Disney's hit franchise, has relocated to Site 9 in Palmdale from Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, unit publicist Michael Singer confirmed Monday. Contrary to media reports that circulated over the weekend, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards did not make a slightly tipsy cameo appearance as Capt. Jack Sparrow's father at the former aircraft production hangar at 30th Street East and Avenue P. Filming of Richards' scenes with Depp took place elsewhere, Singer said. The publicist would not confirm if Depp and co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were on location in Palmdale. According to earlier reports, the three were slated to be at Site 9 in September to film the remainder of "At World's End."

Singer refused to provide any other details about the shoot, including how long the production is scheduled to remain at Site 9. Disney has rented Hangar 703 from Los Angeles World Airports through at least November. In contrast to last month's filming in Palos Verdes, during which Johnny Depp often would emerge from his trailer to greet fans and sign autographs, the cast and crew of the movie are keeping a low profile in Palmdale. Small yellow signs reading "P2/3" could be seen Monday afternoon at the intersection of Avenue P and 30th Street East. The parking lot at Site 9 was moderately full of cars, trailers and equipment trucks, but a patrolling security vehicle provided the only stirring of life outside the facility's gates. -- Full report

Orlando Bloom: Shy Guy?
posted by Jas, 09/23/06
People magazine has an interview with Orlando where he talked about his embarrassment doing love scenes, keeping his own love life private – and Marlon "Hottie" Brando. Stacie has the scan

Your costar Zoë Saldaña tells us that kissing you was 'gross.' How could she?
I hated kissing Zoë too! I was like, "Take your tongue out of my mouth, please. Your boyfriend is standing right there." Most people think kissing beautiful costars must be great. But it's always awkward, man.

Haven, about doomed teenage love on Grand Cayman, is darker than your big blockbusters. Did that appeal to you?
Some people have said it's too hard-core for teenage audiences. But it deals with (real) issues. You go on vacation, sit by the pool, go to the bar. . . . In this movie you get to see the underbelly of . . . the Cayman Islands.

You've reportedly split with Kate Bosworth.
People always ask me whether (we're) together or not. It's still nobody's business.

Fair enough. Can you give us an update on Pirates of the Caribbean?
We're in the middle of part 3. I've loved working on Pirates, but I'm looking forward to new projects. When you do a movie that's so successful, people think that's all you've done. "Oh, he's that pirate guy!"

Or 'that heartthrob guy?'
That doesn't bother me. Name any of my heroes, and they were hotties. Brando was a pinup, so was James Dean, Paul Newman. I'm not going to (rest) on my "teen hottie" laurels. I have aspirations to do more than that. (Still) they're very loyal fans, those teenage girls! I definitely appreciate them.

Keith Richards on the set of Pirates 3
posted by Jas, 09/21/06
Fox News has a report on Keith Richards' his first day of shooting Pirates 3

A not terribly sober Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has filmed his cameo as Johnny Depp's swashbuckling dad in "Pirates of the Caribbean 3," which is shooting somewhere in Southern California in a place called Palmdale. Last night at Premiere magazine's decidedly swellegant Women in Hollywood Icon awards gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we heard a good story about Richards from gifted Brit actor Bill Nighy (you know him from playing a Richards like rock star in "Love Actually").

Nighy wasn't on set when Richards came for his big Hollywood moment, but he more or less confirmed for us a tale we'd heard earlier. Richards, no stranger to substances and liquids, was left to his own devices in his trailer before his big scene. That wasn't a good idea. When the time came to shoot, he was a bit "wobbly." To keep him straight, director Gore Verbinski held Richards by the shins.

"You've got to keep straight," Verbinski told him. "If you'd wanted straight, then you got the wrong man," Richards replied huskily. Richards' pirate costume, sources say, closely resembles Depp's, with a different colored bandana. The two had such a good time together that Depp kept a souvenir from Richards' short visit: a set of stairs built for Richards to get in and out of his trailer, which he signed to Depp with the salutation, "A step too far."

Orlando Bloom is a total technophobe
posted by Jas, 09/20/06
Orlando talks to the Mirror admitting that he doesn't have email and he's not on Myspace. He's just not techno savvy.

Orlando Bloom has admitted he has no email address as he cannot "deal with new technology". The Pirates of the Caribbean actor confessed he needs to catch up and joked his dog Sidi is better on computers than him. Orlando, 29, said: "I still don't have email. I don't even have a computer. "I've never been on MySpace. I just didn't want to deal with it." The star added he did not aim to stay in the technology dark ages. Orlando said: "I don't have a computer yet but I'm getting one."

The British actor, who sent himself up on BBC2 in Ricky Gervais's Extras last week, also insisted he will never quit London for the US. He said: "I wouldn't up and move to Hollywood. "Maybe one day it would be a good idea to have somewhere to keep stuff so I don't have crates of luggage around the world. "But I would always consider London my home. "I'll always return here and be with my family."

Dead Man's Chest DVD out on December 5
posted by Jas, 09/19/06
Press release for the release of Dead Man's Chest DVD is out, both the single and double discs versions will be released on the same day on December 5, 2006. There's another report from USA Today

The Dead Man's Chest DVD will come out in both a single-disc edition ($30) and a two-disc collector's edition ($35). Both DVDs have bloopers and commentary from writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who also are writing the upcoming movie. The collector's edition also comes with 10 featurettes, including a profile on Depp, an inside look at the movie's premiere on Disneyland's Main Street, a photo diary from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a feature on how Disneyland's popular Pirates of the Caribbean attraction became the basis for a movie and an extensive making-of documentary.

For the DVD, Bruckheimer worked to be sure the special features give audiences something fresh. "We wanted to give people more than they saw in the theater, a little insight into the filmmaking process," he says. For the making-of featurette, "a documentary filmmaker followed us around during the prep work, and you'll see things that went wrong, as well as the joy of the first day of filming, which is really nice." Bruckheimer says work on the third installment in the franchise is progressing nicely.

"We shot a lot of Chow Yun-Fat's stuff already, and we should finish the principal actors by the beginning of November, so we are quite a ways into it." The third film is expected to open May 25, on Memorial Day weekend. And by Christmas 2007, expect a DVD release and a boxed set of all three films.

Orlando wants to do theatre

Wenn reports that Orlando wants to do some theatre saying that he's looking for the right material.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom is desperate for a theatre role because that's where he always thought he'd begin his acting career. The British actor was plucked from obscurity, direct from film school and given the role of Legolas in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the big movie roles have tumbled from there. But Bloom is keen to "earn his stripes" in the theatre. He says, "I really want to do some theatre. My career took this marching pace that meant that I was running to the beat of a drum that I wasn't quite sure where the noise was coming from."I'm avidly looking for the right sort of material that I can do something with."

Keith Richards sets sail as Depp's pirate dad
posted by Jas, 09/14/06
Daily Mail reports that Keith Richards has been filming his cameo for Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End. Both Orlando and Keira have also returned to Los Angeles to shoot some of the studio scenes.

Keith Richard is set to sail onto the world's cinema screens next Spring as Johnny Depp's dad. The third film in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga is due to be released next May. Fellow band member Ronnie Wood said Richards had been "hard at work on the set with Johnny Depp.

"He said he's gonna come to the next rehearsal in character - he's gonna come straight off set dressed as a pirate, and come to rehearsals." Wood said that clean shaven Richards was undergoing a bit of a change for the role: "He said to me: 'I'm not allowed to shave from now on, so they're gonna tie little bits on my beard. Whatever bits grow, they're gonna dangle bits off of it, and the longer it gets, the more they're gonna tie on'." "He promised to take a Polaroid as I'm dying to see it!," said Wood.

Disney announced that the new Pirates of the Caribbean will be released globally on May 25th next year, rather than gradually around the world. Mark Zoradi, president of the Disney Motion Pictures Group said: "All we need to do is get the trailer out there, put together a good campaign and I think the audience is going to be with us." But it may not be the last Pirates film. "The third film... will conclude the initial Pirates trilogy, though it is unlikely to be the last Pirates sequel." Richards filmed his performance before The Stones began US tour dates this week. -- Full report

Haven review and premiere photos

A review of Haven from various sources, and more premiere photos from iF Magazine and Entertainment World

Set amidst the Cayman's lush, almost garishly beautiful beaches, nightclubs, and condos, writer-director Frank E. Flowers's intense, tautly paced thriller proves that people can turn even the most picturesque places into a hellish pit. Parts of his feverishly presented film are awkwardly convoluted, hampered by an overly ambitious narrative structure. Yet, the edgy mood and the unexpected eruptions of shocking violence are like something from a gritty South Central rap thriller – albeit with beaches and jerk chicken. And the movie powerfully conveys a seething rage that lurks just beneath the crystal blues and gorgeous greens of paradise. Bloom is anything but elfin in a nicely angsty and lovelorn performance. Also engaging is Bruckner, as a teenager who's totally out of her depth in the sinister, claustrophobic surroundings. -- LA Citybeat

There are dozens more characters, and to Flowers' credit, the movie is well-written enough to let us know who these people are even if they aren't all given enough screen time to really develop. Each of the storylines is interesting enough on its own, but they are made better by intersecting with one other. We're forced to follow closely or risk losing track of the timeline, who is who, how they know each other. But Haven is complex and smart, a challenging film to keep track of, but one whose value is found in doing precisely that. Flowers' direction is unobtrusive—it's his writing that is really on display here, touching on everything from young love to the weight of a million bucks in cash, and offering up one delicious twist after another. And the Cayman Islands (long an offshore tax haven for business interests that are questionable or otherwise) look luscious, a hot, sweaty place to have a good time and get into serious trouble. As the saying goes, what happens in the Cayman Islands stays in the Cayman Islands. San Diego Citybeat

Indie film is a 'Haven' for Bloom
posted by Jas, 09/13/06
The Star has an interview with Orlando about Haven.

While Orlando Bloom's good looks have helped rather than hindered his career, the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean star is more than okay with undergoing facial scarring as part of the job on Haven, an independent film he stars in and produces. "I wanted to lose an eye," the British actor said. "I wasn't allowed and I should have been because I'm the producer, right? Actually, you know why I didn't? Because there wasn't enough time. The makeup girl did . . . an incredible job of doing that scar, which I thought was really effective. But to lose an eye and everything else, it would have taken too long."

In the film, Bloom's character Shy is a carefree young fisherman in the Cayman Islands who finally makes love to his girlfriend Andrea (Zoe Saldana). Her affluent family, however, is extremely protective, and her brother Hammer (Anthony Mackie) retaliates by flinging a corrosive chemical in Shy's face, burning the skin surrounding his left eye. Shy becomes moody and reclusive, only communicating with Andrea by phone, while she deals with his abandonment and her family's disapproval by doing drugs and engaging in meaningless sex with a revolving door of partners.

"There's a line where she says, `Have you ever been in love?' to this therapist," said Bloom, "and you feel the pain in that moment that this young girl who is just heartbroken. When you're young and you're in love and it doesn't work out, it hurts. It feels like it's life-threatening pain. "The purity of their connection is one that is sort of tainted by the opinion of the world outside - the father, the brother, everyone having an opinion about it and not being good with it. And it's what ultimately destroys it. So, this love was crushed. The fallout of that is a kid gets disfigured, she disfigures herself from the inside really, and rejects it all."

In a parallel plot line, corrupt businessman Carl Ridley (Bill Paxton) is on the run with teenage daughter Pippa (Agnes Bruckner) in tow and hides out in his Cayman Islands bungalow. She befriends native Caymanian Fritz (Victor Rasuk), whose life becomes intertwined with the Ridleys when a desperate need for cash leads him to make a move on Carl's stash.

"Some people have said it's a bit too hardcore and raw for teenage audiences," said Bloom, "and I go `You know what? It deals with the issues of teenage life, of growing up in this culture.' You go on holiday to the Caribbean islands and you see one side of it. You're there to relax by the pool, get your drink served. You go to the beach or to the bar. You don't really understand what the underbelly of that island is like. In this movie you get to see that. The Cayman Islands is a relatively peaceful environment, a safe environment in fact, but it happens everywhere. It's real life."

Although Bloom learned that he needed dexterity in order to scale fish for his role, he found other aspects about his character easier to grasp. "I grew up like any other kid trying to find my place in the world and wanting to make a mark and have been confronted by other kids, or the jealousies," he said. "We all have that. Each kid has an area of excellence and sometimes people take a stab at that because of envy or greed or bitterness." Bloom enjoyed his first taste as a producer on the film as well, beginning when he met the young writer-director Frank E. Flowers, who rewrote the character Shy specifically for the Hollywood star. The actor doesn't have any immediate plans to create his own production shingle, but would enjoy wearing the producer's hat in the future.

"I'd love to. In a way I feel like I've been so fortunate at such a young age to be a part of so many fantastically huge movies," Bloom said. "But anyone at my age being a part of those movies can only really be a passenger. You know what I mean? You hitch your ride onto the end of the roller coaster and you're whiplashed all over the back of it. And being part of this production, I really felt for the first time that I was in control.

"Now, I actually want to take a breath and make choices that I feel really good about and come back to what it was that excited me in the first place. Making movies like `Haven' with Zoe and this great cast and getting to be a family on it was wonderful. I really want to get into the driver's seat. I'm turning 30 and I want to do that, whether they fly or flail or float or whatever they do, I want to enjoy them. I'd like to continue to do that whilst hopefully making other movies as well." Haven opens in limited release on Friday, Sept. 15.

Orlando's Extras scene

Ashley Jensen talks about Orlando and their Extras scene, be sure to catch the first episode of season 2 of Extras featuring Orlando on Friday, Sept 14 on BBC 2 at 9 pm

"Seeing [famous people] up close has made me realise they're just people who happen to be film stars. Those figures that you see 24ft-high, up there on the cinema screen, are actually just like you and me. Orlando Bloom's face is everywhere at the moment. When he arrived on set, I was thinking, 'That's Orlando Bloom!' but he was just a lovely, unpretentious guy."

Jensen has several terrific scenes with Bloom in the first episode of the new series of Extras, which starts tomorrow night on BBC2. The joke is that Maggie, constantly gagging for a date, rejects the actor regularly voted the most fanciable man on the planet. Maggie tells him to his face that people only say he's attractive because he's famous: "If you were the prop boy, you'd get ignored." Bloom responds with increasingly desperate attempts to impress her by slagging off his supposed rival heart-throb, Johnny Depp. Boastfully showing Maggie a poll that names himself as No 1 Fantasy Snog For Women, Bloom "casually" mentions that "you better not show this to Johnny Depp. He's only No 4."

Interview with Orlando and Frank E. Flowers
    posted by Jas, 09/12/06
Newsday has an interview with Orlando and Frank E. Flowers about Haven

Orlando Bloom may be a teen heartthrob, thanks to a certain series of hobbit films, but he's not the kind of guy who'll hold it against you if you spill carrot juice on him. "I was a little nervous," says Frank E. Flowers, a young writer and director from the Cayman Islands, recalling his first meeting - and beverage crisis - with Bloom.

"I asked, 'You want another one?' and he said, 'Uhhh ... no,'" Flowers says, laughing. "I thought, great - there goes the meeting." But there it didn't go. Bloom gave Flowers his cell phone number and encouraged the fledgling filmmaker to keep in touch. He did, and the result is their collaboration "Haven," a dark drama about teenagers living in the Cayman Islands. The film, co-starring Bill Paxton and Zoe Saldana, opens in New York this Friday.

On a terrace at Manhattan's Regency Hotel, where he's come to promote the film, Bloom squints as he thinks back to early versions of the script, which is split into three disparate tales. As the story progresses, subtle clues reveal links between characters. It was confusing when he first read it, Bloom admits. "But I knew it would be something quite loose and free and cool," he says.

    Not a Caymans come-on

Yes to all three, though the film is no travel ad for the Cayman Islands. The characters are wounded: There are drug addicts in search of a fix or bathroom tryst, gang members out to jump tourists, tourists on the run with something to hide. In Paxton's case, it's a bag of cash, with which he arrives on the island, fleeing the feds in Miami and setting off a chain of events that can only lead to disaster.

Bloom plays Shy, a soulful, part-Caymanian man who yearns for the lovely Andrea (played by Saldana), though the match is one her family forbids. "It's an honest little movie that doesn't pull any punches," Bloom says. "It deals with youth culture and the way kids handle sex, drugs, violence, peer pressure, class, race - all those things."

Bloom was initially offered another role but found himself drawn to Shy, even though the part was originally written as a 15-year-old Caymanian. Flowers rewrote the character. The first Shy "was this lecherous kind of guy," Flowers says. "But Orlando - he's just not that guy. So ... sort of evolved into this, thank God, this emotional love story that has become the most compelling part of the film."

Impressed by Flowers' boundless enthusiasm, Bloom signed on to help produce. It's his first producer credit, and Bloom says he enjoyed behind-the-camera worries about the music or the movie poster - or the scene in which Saldana has an argument and kicks the side of a car. "She just improvised this little moment, and it works fantastically, but she actually dented the car," Bloom recalls. "That cost us. . . 10 grand. That's lunch for everyone tomorrow. Suddenly, you realize the consequences of all these things."

    No swashbuckling

"Haven" is a far cry from the kind of blockbuster fare that made Bloom a household name - at least, in households with tween girls. The boyish face of the British-born actor is plastered on bedroom walls across the nation, thanks to his swashbuckling turns in popular trilogies "The Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

"There aren't many down sides," he says. "It's not like I get mauled. Sometimes, it can be a little chaotic if I find myself in a shopping mall at the wrong time. "It's not cool to be a teen idol. It's much cooler to be a dude who is ..." The eyes squint again. "I don't know, to be like Jimmy Dean. But Jimmy Dean was a teen idol. So was Paul Newman. So was Marlon Brando."

Bloom recalls discussing the phenomenon with Brad Pitt, with whom he co-starred in the epic (and critically panned) "Troy." "He said - and he's so cool - he said, 'Just enjoy the ride, man.... The girls put you there, and they'll keep you there.' He's absolutely right. There's no negativity coming from those fans. Just enthusiasm, excitement. When you read the fan letters, there's a genuine sense of appreciation for what you're doing."

An interview with Frank E. Flowers
    posted by Jas, 09/11/06
About.com has an interview with Frank E. Flowers about the script for Haven, the inspiration for the characters, the casting and his decision to direct the movie. Haven will be shown in selected theaters on Friday, September 15

Haven finished post-production in 2004 and had its debut at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival. The film's finally getting its theatrical release in September 2006. Asked what took so long for the movie to be released in theaters, Flowers responded, "To a certain extent, a lot of it - some of it - was a strategy thing. We had to do some work on the film and obviously when you're an independent film you don't have the money to expedite that. And then when we were going to come out, we didn't want to be kind the third Orlando Bloom movie in a row. He loves the film, he wants to support the film, but he's like, 'Dude, I've been on the road forever,' and it's just like not even an option. It's not like he doesn't want to. So we were just like, 'Let's wait till after Pirates and I can use that machine to really get [going].' He wants people to see it. He's a producer on the film and it's not even about him as an actor or his role, it's about this little film that he jumped into and he supported and produced and starred in and sort of wants to push. The rest of the cast were equally supportive. It's been really cool." -- Full interview

    In defense of Orlando Bloom
    posted by Jas, 09/11/06
MSNBC has an article on Orlando and defending his acting ability.

Orlando Bloom is not a bad actor. He isn’t Olivier, but he isn’t Shatner, either. Why, then, does everyone assume he’s a bad actor? For starters, he’s pretty. Not “handsome,” mind you: pretty. The bulk of Bloom’s fame derives from his role as Legolas in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and while he acquitted himself well with a bow and arrow in those films, he also had very long flaxen hair, the sort that usually belongs to mermaids and Disney heroines. The Legolas part turned Bloom not just into a household name, but also into a tween-girl pin-up in the style of Joey McIntyre of New Kids On The Block, a cute and romantic idea of a boy, but without any of the threatening, hairy adult sexuality.

Furthermore, Bloom played … an elf. There’s nothing wrong with prettiness per se, or with playing elves, but those factors do make it more difficult to take him seriously in human, grown-up roles.

The roles themselves also present a problem, because Bloom has almost exclusively acted in gigantic epics and/or period pieces, which require a number of tools that Bloom doesn’t have in his arsenal (starting, sad to say, with the ability to grow a convincing mustache). In movies about Crusaders or ancient heroes, audiences expect a certain physical heft, and while Bloom is not spindly, he’s not imposing enough for these genres, either. You believe Russell Crowe is a gladiator because he’s built like a fire hydrant; you believe Brad Pitt is Achilles because he’s oiled up and looks like an advertisement for Pilates. You don’t believe Bloom as a legendary warrior in “Kingdom of Heaven,” though, because his costume looks like it’s about to swallow him — and, in their scenes together, so does Liam Neeson.

Subtle acting in bombastic period flicks

Audiences expect actors in large-scale costume flicks to get in there and ham it up, too, and Bloom doesn’t do that; he does things more subtly, and as a result, he often barely registers. It’s not really fair to blame Bloom for his performance in “Troy” — the writing he has to work with is weak, and on top of that, he’s playing Paris, one of the more ineffectual characters in the literary tradition. But Bloom often looks overmatched and intimidated onscreen. Eric Bana, who’s playing Hector, is far more compelling, and Bana isn’t even very good; he’s doing a lot of bellowing, though, and that makes the difference. Edward Norton acts rings around Bloom in “Kingdom of Heaven”…from behind an immobile painted mask. And it probably goes without saying that Johnny Depp makes a meal of Bloom in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

Of course, when Captain Jack Sparrow is onscreen, nobody else is going to make much of an impression, so, again, it’s unfair to say that Bloom is a bad actor just because he’s getting upstaged by a flamboyant Keith Richards impression (Geoffrey Rush got upstaged by it too, and he’s no acting slouch). But it seems to happen to Bloom a lot — everyone around him is merrily chewing the scenery while Bloom just stands there, looking gassy — and if he’s going to appear in larger-than-life films, he needs to learn to kick it up a notch. “Ned Kelly” is a case in point; when Heath Ledger is rampaging around the set, growling in that angry bass of his and wearing a ridiculously huge fake beard that may have eaten Pittsburgh, and a bucket as a helmet, subtle variations in eyebrow angle just won’t get the job done. But the eyebrow does score the occasional point. If you watch the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” carefully, you’ll see a handful of hilarious reaction shots from Bloom. He’s a good straight man for Depp, his swordplay is believable, and in his scenes with Keira Knightley, he’s puppyish — but that’s what the role calls for, and he does it well. You wouldn’t believe him as James Bond, but when he’s cast properly, he gets the job done.

    More than a pretty boy

Bloom is not a talentless pretty-boy by any means. He just needs to fine-tune his approach to projects so that he doesn’t seem like quite such a non-entity. He might start with a moratorium on period films for a couple of years: no swords, no sandals, no ancient or imaginary lands. “Elizabethtown” would have been a great first step in that direction, if the movie hadn’t been obnoxious (it was) and if Kirsten Dunst’s spazzy turn as Claire had not overwhelmed Bloom by comparison (it did), so he might also consider taking roles that actually call for him to act — not just to re-act, or to wait quietly in the background while his co-stars Brando it up in the spotlight.

Comedy seems like a promising choice for Bloom, or a small part in a Wes Anderson film — he should do something different. Get in a food fight. Play a junkie or a criminal. Cut his hair short. Do an American accent. He shouldn’t do these things to prove he can, the way actresses love to “ugly up” because it betters their chances for an Oscar. He should do these things because he already can; it’s just that nobody can tell, because all the hobbits and bronze shields and galloping horses and subtitled Saracen dialogue (and crappy English dialogue) are drowning him out. He can do the job, but it would be easier for him to do it — and for us to appreciate him for it — if he didn’t have to wear seventy pounds of plate mail to work every day, or utter grand historical pronouncements that would sound forced and stagy no matter whose mouth they came out of.

Bloom needs to focus on the writing, to look for dialogue that he can deliver convincingly. If he can do that, and if he can avoid roles that call for luxuriant facial hair, the kid might just have a future in this business. But if he doesn’t make some changes in the way he picks parts…well, there are only so many elf roles to go around.

    Interview with 'Maggie'

The Guardian has an interview with Ashley Jensen who plays Maggie in Extras where she talks about the series among other things.

Extras is famous for its A-list celebrity cameos - Ben Stiller and Samuel L Jackson last year, and in the new series Orlando Bloom, David Bowie and Chris Martin. Is that scary enough for her? 'Sometimes when you meet these people, you're thinking - please don't let me down, please don't be awful.' But everyone loves it and enters into the spirit. It's so relaxed. And at the end of the day, they are just people. There are moments when I go [gulp] ... David Bowie! Or when I'm standing at the bus stop next to Orlando Bloom's huge Pirates of the Caribbean poster, and I'm thinking, "My God I was talking about dogs with him just yesterday.'

    Ricky Gervais talks about Orlando
    posted by Jas, 09/07/06
The Independent has an interview with Ricky Gervais where he talks about Orlando and his episode in the season two of Extras which begins on BBC2 on 14 September.

In the first episode, Orlando Bloom bravely takes the rise out of his image as one of the world's most swoon-inducing heart-throbs. Displaying a commendable willingness to lampoon himself, this Bloom is vanity on legs. The gag is that Maggie, who previously showed herself comically eager to date anyone with a pulse, spurns his advances. Increasingly frustrated, he tries to win her over by planting his most passionate kiss on her lips. When he steps back, however, she looks distinctly non-plussed, shrugging: "Not really my cup of tea."

Gervais says that Bloom was a tremendously good sport. "We needed the biggest 30-year-old heart-throb in the world because the joke is that he falls for Maggie and it's the one time she's not interested. Orlando was great - he wanted to make the character really desperate. "He totally sends himself up. In real life, he doesn't go around worrying about polls of the most handsome actors in the world. He knows that if you want any longevity in this business, the last thing you want to be known as is pretty."

    Orlando's Extras episode
    posted by Jas, 09/05/06
Reports on Orlando's appearance on Extras upcoming episode from various source. The second series of Extras starts on BBC Two on Thursday 14 September at 9pm. Update: A picture from the episode.

Orlando Bloom is apparently to tear Johnny Depp to pieces in a new TV series. Don't worry though as it's all in jest as Orlando appears in the second series of EXTRAS alongside Ricky Gervais. He appears in the first episode of the new series, and is said by the Mirror to be playing a vain actor who boasts that all of the women were all over him on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. "It's my looks that all the girls fawn all over. Nobody was bothered about Johnny on set." The newspaper reports that he says in the show. "Johnny freak 'I make art-house movies and have stupid scissors for hands'. Willy Wonka more like Johnny Wanker." What will Johnny think? -- Hollywood News

Ricky Gervais and Ashley Jensen return to screens this month with the second series of Extras and a whole host of cameos. Think a self-obsessed Orlando Bloom with serious issues about Johnny Depp, or Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe with anger management issues reaching Tourette's Syndrome proportions, as well as David Bowie, Ian McKellen and er… Keith Chegwin. -- The Stage

The first episode of the new series sees a vain Orlando Bloom showing off magazine articles that name him the world's sexiest movie star, and incredulous when Maggie reveals she is not attracted to him. "He did say when we got him the first draft he loved it and said we can go further if we want," says Gervais. "They either get it or they don't. If they get it, they trust us and we can go anywhere. It's never happened that someone has said, 'I just can't do this.'" -- BBC
